Source : MegaTech USS Bataan (LHD 5) is a multipurpose Amphibious Assault ship commissioned in 1997 and home ported in Norfolk, VA. With a crew of nearly 1000 Sailors and Marines, the ship is capable of embarking a Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), a mix of aircraft including the MV-22 Osprey tilt rotor helicopter and AV-8B Harrier Light Attack Jet, and up to three Landing Craft Air Cushion. U.S. Fleet support of naval operations to ensure maritime stability and security in the Central Region, connecting the Mediterranean and the Pacific through the Western Indian Ocean and three strategic choke points.
